The Derbyshire village of Swarkestone is famous for being mentioned twice in the 1086 Domesday Book when known as both Sorchestun and Suerchestune. It holds a prominent position on the River Trent, situated midway between Burton on Trent and Derby, about 6 miles from each. The village is noted for its Grade I listed bridge which was built in the 13th century. The village staged a series of race meetings in the 19th century, the first of which took place on Tuesday 4th March 1845 when the feature race was the Repton & Gresley Troop Steeplechase. It staged a meeting in its own right on 28th March 1849, having hosted a further meeting of the Derbyshire Yeomanry at Swarkeston Bridge in 1846. After race celebrations in 1849 were held at the Royal Hotel when large numbers of the gentry sat down to dine.
